The main hazards of coal mine have gas, roof, rock burst, fire, water damage, dust and damage, heat damage and so on. Among them, the gas accident is the most harmful, and was named the "first killer" of coal mines. In 2001-2006, among the major accidents in which more than 10 people died in the country, gas accidents accounted for 80%; in a particularly serious accident with more than 30 deaths, gas accidents accounted for 83%; 24 major accidents with more than 100 deaths. Among them, there were 21 gas and coal dust accidents, and the number of accidents and deaths accounted for 88% and 90% respectively. Gas accidents are the most harmful, with an average of 3.30 deaths per accident. In addition, almost all coal mines in the country have gas outflows, with an annual output of more than 15 billion m3. There are 4,462 high-gas mines in the country, highlighting the 911 mine. Among the state-owned key coal mines, high gas outburst mines account for about 50%, and about 250 are prominent mines. As of the end of 2007, the country has accumulated more than 16400 times, accounting for about 40% of the world's total number of outstanding times. Therefore, China is one of the countries with the most serious coal and gas outbursts in the world.

To this end, the following measures are proposed to prevent suffocation and death in mines.

First, each mine must have sufficient ventilation capacity, reliable ventilation facilities, and a complete ventilation system to ensure sufficient airflow in the underground production site and stable wind flow to meet the oxygen demand of underground workers.

Second, while using methane detection alarm device, carbon monoxide detector to check the content of methane and carbon monoxide, oxygen detector should also be used to check the oxygen content to prevent hypoxia and suffocation.

3. The management of blind alleys and goaf areas shall be closed in time in strict accordance with the provisions of the “Safety Regulations for Coal Mines”.

Fourth, strictly control the ventilation state of the corner joint roadway to prevent breeze or no ventilation, resulting in local over-limitation of methane or high nitrogen deficiency.

5. Whenever there is a geological structure changing section, methane and nitrogen local enrichment area, timely take corresponding safety technical measures.

6. Blasting must use water cannon mud. Spraying water must be sprayed before and after shooting to enhance local ventilation and prevent nitrogen dioxide poisoning.

7. When dealing with explosions and underground fire accidents, it is necessary to correctly analyze the damage of the ventilation system and the degree of influence of the fire and wind pressure on the mine airflow. Reasonably determine the evacuation route of the personnel in the disaster area and the route of the rescuers to avoid the death of personnel poisoning and suffocation.

Eight, equipped with ventilation monitoring instruments, improve monitoring methods.
