The world's first full-body PET scan imager is about to be born

[Chinese instrument network instrument research and development] Monitoring the real-time dynamic response of drugs, toxins and other substances in the body has always been a very important technical means of clinical medicine, PET scanning imager to meet this requirement. With technological innovation, a new full-body PET scan imager was born.

Today, a research team from the University of California is working on the world's first full-body PET scan imager that can perform 3D imaging of the body. They believe that this more accurate, comprehensive, and sensitive imaging technology will promote our understanding of the body, and at the same time it can monitor the real-time dynamic response of drugs, toxins and other substances in the body.

It sounds crazy to inject radioactive material into the human body, but it indicates an effective technique to acquire a "snapshot" of the body's physiology. This is the charm of nuclear medicine imaging. It integrates multidisciplinary technologies such as nuclear technology, computer science, chemistry, physics, biology, and medicine for use in disease diagnosis, drug development, and other purposes. Among them, positron emission tomography (PET) is a relatively advanced medical imaging technology in this field and uses radioactive particles to track diseases (cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, etc.).

Last month, they published the first paper of the project in Physics in Medicine and Biology, detailing the early progress of the project. This week, R & D team leader Simon Cherry and Ramsey Badawi, bioengineers at the University of California, published a paper in the journal Science Translational Medicine, and looked forward to the prospects for the application of this instrument.

The R&D team named it EXPLORER (EXtreme Performance LOng Research scanneR) and hopes that it will be used clinically for the first time in 2018.
