The FSI engine basically automatically selects two operating modes depending on the engine load conditions. It is a layered lean burn at low loads and a homogeneous combustion at high loads.
At low loads (stratified lean burn), the throttle is semi-open, the fuel system injects fuel into the engine's compression stroke, and the special piston top design creates a tumble of the inhaled air and the injected fuel, forming only around the spark plug. A sufficiently combusted air-fuel mixture that achieves a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio to ignite the mixture in the entire combustion chamber; and elsewhere in the combustion chamber is a high-air-fuel mixture that is rich in air, thus forming lean combustion.
At full load (homogeneous combustion), the amount of fuel injected is precisely controlled according to the amount of intake air, and the fuel is injected into the cylinder synchronously with the air and fully atomized and mixed, so that the mixture complying with the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio uniformly fills the combustion chamber, that is, , the formation of homogeneous combustion, full combustion to make the engine power to the fullest. The evaporation of the fuel causes the mixture to cool down to remove the knock. This means that in the case of uniform combustion, a lower fuel consumption is achieved while achieving high power output and torque.
The Volkswagen 2.0-liter FSI turbocharged engine (2.0 T-FSI) has the common feature of direct injection fuel injection of similar direct injection engines, and also has a turbocharger to create powerful power. The power boost is very obvious, the outstanding torque output area, excellent response provides the driver with perfect control pleasure, and there is no mechanical turbocharger power lag.
The 2.0 T-FSI engine on the Volkswagen GTI has 4 cylinders with 4 valves per cylinder; the 1,984 cm3 power unit provides a maximum output of 147 kW / 200 hp at 5,100 rpm. The wide torque output area - at 1,800 to 5,000 rpm, achieves and maintains a maximum torque of 280 Nm, making it the ideal engine for sporty cars.
In 2005, Volkswagen's 2.0-liter T-FSI engine received the "Best Engine of the Year" award from UKIP Media & Events Automotive Magazine. The award was selected by 56 professional automotive journalists from 26 countries. The jury gave a high evaluation, saying that it achieved the "high combination of high technology, high performance, economy and environmental protection." It represents the top level of today's world automotive engine technology.
