The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has already voted on the second reading of the proposal to ban the import and export of heavy metal mercury from the EU on December 1, 2010, which is seven months earlier than the date proposed by the European Commission. In the first reading of the amendment, MEPs (members of the European Parliament) also submitted proposals on the import of mercury on the same day that the export ban was imposed and that imported products should cover mercury, cinnabar and mercury compounds, and safe storage of mercury. However, these proposals have been rejected by the European Council. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) very much agree with the European Commission’s tough stance on the ban on mercury exports, but they also expressed their disappointment at the Commission’s decision to permanently store mercury waste within the EU. More detailed parliamentary recommendations will be voted in May.
